Macbeth is an exciting, passionate, musical retelling
of Shakespeare’s classic play in a unique
Steampunk-inspired world. The story, while staying true
to the play, has an original script with enough changes
to make it accessible as a musical, entertaining as a
story, and different enough to keep you involved. The
story follows very intimately the relationships and
interactions with the characters that are so frequently
glossed over; the friendships, the betrayals, the
manipulations, and the violence that arise because of
these intimacies. But throughout the interaction
between the characters, one also gets a rare glimpse
inside them. We are able to finally feel their loss,
their confusion, their love, and their rage.
The music is melodic and memorable, and the lyrics are
involved and poetic; both with a modern edge. The music
and lyrics take advantage of thematic elements that are
peppered and even hidden throughout the show, all of
this binding the show together to attain cathartic
climaxes for the characters.
Macbeth premiered January 19th, 2011 at Theatre 80 St.
